
Getting the Most Out of Your Reflector-Backed Halogen IR Lamps
Think of a standard halogen lamp like a lightbulb that wastes half its energy heating up the air behind it. That’s just lost money. By adding a high-reflectivity backing, we basically put a mirror behind the heat. Instead of letting that energy drift away, we shove it all forward. The result? You get roughly double the heat density hitting your workpiece. It’s a lot more efficient. The Power Side of Things When we’re picking out lamps, it all comes down to your power grid—wattage and voltage. But here’s the tricky part: if you’re running high-wattage tubes, you can’t just “plug and play.” You need precise voltage regulation. If you don’t, you’ll burn through your filaments way too fast. Now, if you push a ton of power through a short tube, the heat flux goes through the roof. That’s great for fast cycles, but it puts a massive strain on your housing. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, your housing is going to warp. Simple as that. The Nitty-Gritty: Materials and Plugs The quartz tube is the real hero here. It handles the insane heat of the halogen cycle, which basically “recycles” tungsten back onto the filament so it lasts longer. For the connections, we stick with R7s or SK15. Why? Because they don’t wiggle loose when things get hot and the metal starts to expand. Then there’s the reflector. You’ve usually got a choice between aluminum or gold. Gold is the gold standard—it reflects infrared light way better—but it’ll cost you more. Real-World Use (and the Gotchas) You’ll see these all over the place—PET bottle blowing, curing paint, or welding plastics. Because the reflector makes them so efficient, you can usually shrink the size of your heating bank. It saves a ton of space. But there is a catch. Because the beam is so concentrated, the focal point is narrow. If your part is even a little bit off-center, you’re going to end up with hot spots and uneven curing. You’ve got to be careful with the distance between the lamp and your target. Get it too close, and you’ll scorch your material before you even know what happened.
