
Let’s Talk About Halogen Medium-Wave IR
Think of medium-wave (MW) lamps as the “sweet spot” of the heating world. They aren’t as aggressive as short-wave, but they’ve got more punch than long-wave. We build them for those tricky jobs where you need the heat to actually sink deep into the material without torching the surface.
How it actually works
Here is the secret sauce: we take a tungsten filament and wrap it in a quartz envelope filled with a specific halogen gas mix. Why bother with the gas? Because it stops the filament from evaporating too fast. That means you get a lamp that runs hotter and lasts longer. It’s just smarter engineering. The magic happens in the spectrum (usually 2.0 to 4.0 microns). This range just clicks with organic materials and polymers. Instead of the heat just sitting on top of your part, it dives right in.
The hardware side of things
When we’re building these tubes, it all comes down to power density. Whether you’re on a 230V or 400V setup, the wattage per centimeter is what decides how fast your parts ramp up to temperature. For the connectors, we stick with R7s or SK15. They’re industry standards for a reason—they just work. When a lamp eventually burns out, you want to be able to swap it out in seconds, not spend an hour fighting with the hardware. One quick tip: we use heavy-wall quartz so the tubes don’t crack when the temperature swings. But please,**don’t touch the glass with your bare hands.**The oils from your skin create tiny hot spots, and that’s the fastest way to kill a perfectly good lamp.
Getting it onto your shop floor
You’ll mostly see these in PET blowing, paint curing, or drying lines. They’re great because they don’t take up nearly as much room as those bulky long-wave ceramics. But there is a trade-off. Higher wattage means more heat, but it also puts a lot more stress on your power supply. If you’re installing a high-wattage array, double-check that your wiring and contactors can handle that initial surge of power. And a word of advice: give your sensors some breathing room. If the housing isn’t ventilated, you’re basically baking your own electronics. Plan your airflow early, and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches later.
